8 words / Broken Hill (1992/2022)
The first glow of dawn; the sun at its zenith; the afternoon point when an object’s shortest midday shadow-length has grown by the object’s own height; the moment the sun dips below the horizon; and lastly, when the evening glow is gone and darkness finally falls: each one a signal for the Adhan, the classical Arabic call to prayer, to be sounded.
It’s a long time since the Adhan was regularly heard from Broken Hill’s modest nineteenth century, corrugated iron, edge-of-town mosque. By briefly restoring this feature of the city’s sonic landscape, my work serves as a reminder of a significant strand in its rich history.
