Michael LEWARNE

Desert Event Horizon

electronic timers, lead acid battery, photovoltaics, LED floods, disco balls

A conceptual rendering of the work

An offering to the sub-atomic, the illusive and the space of the interior.

Evanescent silent disco,
winking in and out of existence.
Spiky cadence,
tearing away the dark.
Unphased beacons.
Transposed pointillism.
Noiseless melody,
photon borne.

I discovered that the most interesting music of all was made by simply lining the loops in unison, and letting them slowly shift out of phase with each other. (Steve Reich, Writings on Music, 1965–2000 (2002), p. 20)

Michael is an artist and architect who has also studied industrial and stage design and jewellery making. His work involves ongoing consideration of spaces, forms, inhabitation and the poetic – encompassing buildings, public art, dance, theatre, jewellery, and designs for lights and darkness – and he also coaches architects in professional practice and human and leadership skills. Michael seeks to expand the nature and boundaries of his projects through cross-disciplinary practice in a way that is critical and constructive. He believes that the joy of art should be integral to all cultural domains and bring vitality to people’s lives, even when it colours outside the lines. Michael lives and works on the unceded land of the Gadigal and Wangal peoples of the Eora Nation.
