CAUTION: Subject to Drought

CAUTION: Subject to Drought installed in Eden Unearthed, Eden Gardens, Sydney (2019), detail: drought meter 4 (image: Brian Rapsey)

Flood meters measure water levels, to indicate danger when water rises, but mine aim to do the opposite: they measure the risk when water levels get too low.

I conceived this five-piece artwork while visiting Randwick Environmental Park in preparation for NOX Night Sculpture Walk 2019. I noticed that the park’s ‘ephemeral’ wetland was completely dried out, and this was the catalyst for the work.

Since then, CAUTION: Subject to Drought has been installed at numerous other locations and has taken on a whole new meaning: in addition to referencing fluctuating water levels, and the importance of irrigation systems in preserving natural life species, it forces us to question what new significance can be created when we take an object with a fixed purpose, like a flood meter, and flip it upside down.

Natasha is a Newcastle-based artist working mainly in sculpture, installation and jewellery making on the land of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples. She has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at UNSW Art & Design, and has exhibited in NOX Night Sculpture Walk 2019 and also in Eden Unearthed (2019–20), Eden Gardens, Sydney, where she received the Highly Commended Student Award.
