One Million Candelas (2001, video still)

Our friend Martin did not like the inclusion of text with his work, despite being a very accomplished writer. I will therefore just say – from my own point of view – that it’s great to have Martin in the show.

This powerful coastal work should resonate beautifully in Australia’s arid zone, which Martin loved with a passion. The work was chosen both to contrast with the surrounds and to talk to the marine fossils lying today on the Line of Lode, where Martin’s powerful work Remote was installed in Desert Equinox.

Martin would not have missed this show for anything, and now he has not.

Martin’s recent sculptures reference familiar signs drawn from contemporary life to highlight the less stable currents of human volition underpinning their use and visibility. His work has been shown in historic sites, civic locations, religious spaces and contemporary galleries, with regular exhibition projects spanning 35 years. Martin attended Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, where he first exhibited before moving to Sydney. The recipient of multiple awards and international residencies, he was a senior lecturer in sculpture at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW for several decades. Martin was also a founding member of the Environmental Research Initiative for Art (ERIA).
