Tipping Point Clock

solar cell, rechargeable battery, electric clock, cardboard box

Concept sketch

The work is set in a darkened space – a cardboard box on the ground. A soft light emits from air holes cut in the box. The viewer is invited to inspect more closely. Some may ignore this invitation, and remain oblivious to what may be contained within.

A tipping point is the critical point in a situation, process or system beyond which a significant, unstoppable change takes place. A tipping point clock starts at 12 midnight and counts the hours which have already been lost as circumstances move towards the unstoppable change. A doomsday clock, on the other hand, counts the time left until midnight, suspending time and even turning back time as circumstances change.

Can time be contained within a box? Time is measured, and we count the moments.

Peter’s practice explores environmental themes and what influence art can bring to bear on the preservation of our world. He works across diverse media, and shows his work outside the confines of traditional contexts. Peter lives and works on the lands of the Bidjigal and Gadigal peoples of the Eora Nation.
